Keith Stephenson Park Car Park Temporary Fencing for Western Sector Trunk Main(1377 kb)

New Western Sewer Trunk Main Construction

Council’s Wastewater system includes a network that collects and delivers effluent and sewage to the Mount Barker Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) from the townships of Nairne, Brukunga, Littlehampton and Mount Barker for treatment.

In 2015, Council endorsed a ‘Wastewater Strategy to Service Growth’.   The aim of the Strategy is to accommodate future growth in Mount Barker, Littlehampton and Nairne and includes the necessary wastewater infrastructure relating to the trunk main collection network, treatment and disposal, utilising existing wastewater infrastructure wherever possible.  The Strategy is to be developer funded over an extended period of time.

Council’s existing wastewater collection network in the south western area of Mount Barker is already operating at capacity at peak times and has previously some experienced volume issues during stormwater events.

In addition, development in the Ministerial Development Plan Amendment (MDPA) western sector growth area, together with infill re-development, will add significant additional capacity demands over the next 30-40 years.

After exploring numerous options in order to provide a wastewater service to the western area of Mount Barker, the broader catchment and to relieve capacity issues in the existing network, it was determined that the best option is to construct a new Western Sewer Trunk Main.

The new sewer trunk main will run from Bollen Road across Keith Stephenson Park reserve, under Adelaide Road and along Mill Street, Knott Street, Newland Street and Hampden Road before connecting into the existing system to the Mount Barker WWTP.

Being a new sewer trunk main, the recommended construction methodology is directional drilling, which offers a number of advantages:

  • cost effective compared to open trenching
  • minimises construction impacts e.g. less road closures and disturbance to Keith Stephenson Park
  • avoids existing services and/or need for service diversions
  • minimises environmental impacts e.g. tree roots.
  • ease and speed of construction

Following a tender process, at the council meeting held on 3 July 2017, the contract to construct the Western Sewer Trunk Main was awarded to SADB Directional Boring (SADB).  This contractor has successfully undertaken other projects for Council.

SADB is proposing to commence works the week of 17 July with target timing for construction completion as advised by the contractor, to be the end of December 2017. Work will commence at Hampden Road and move progressively along the route.

Progress updates about this project will be posted to this page.
