June 2012

ETSA Utilities has indicated that installation of High Voltage cable will be undertaken commencing the week of 12 June.

This involves a heavy cable drum on a truck and a crane truck to lift equipment.

It will be necessary to partly close Druids Ave during this work. An approved traffic management plan will be in place although delays can be expected.

Work is expected to take 4 days but is dependent on weather.

March 2012

Night Works planned for Friday 23 March

To minimise disruption to traffic, night works will be undertaken on Friday 23 March to trench across the intersection of Druids Ave and Hutchinson Street.  Detours and traffic control will be in place.

ETSA Utilities civil contactor, Schwarz Excavations and Civil, has indicated the start for this project as the week beginning 12 March 2012.

Work will commence between Walker Street and Stephen Street and progress in an easterly direction towards Cameron Road.

When excavation works commence, Druids Avenue will be closed to through traffic, with buses and commercial vehicles excepted.  These traffic restrictions will only apply whilst work crews are on site.  Outside working hours Druids Avenue will be reopened to two way traffic.   Manual traffic controllers will allow buses and commercial vehicles access at all times.  Properties adjacent to the work zone will be given prior notice before work commences and disruption will be kept to a minimum.

The contractors will start at 6.00am and endeavour to be off the road by 3.00pm each day to assist with alleviating traffic congestion and completing the project within the shortest time frame.

Council has consulted with EPA in regards to works starting at this time and the EPA has indicated Public Infrastructure work can commence before 7.00am as long as the contractor complies with environmental criteria and minimises any nuisance.

There is a distinct possibility that some out of hours work, including night work may be required depending on site issues.

It is expected that the excavation works for this project will be completed within 10 to 12 weeks from commencement dependant on weather and other unforseen issues after which the electrical work will commence.

January 2012

Council has been advised by ETSA Utilities that their contractor will be commencing work to underground the powerlines on Druids Avenue at the end of February 2012. This is later than previously anticipated by ETSA Utilities. Updates will continue to posted as information comes to hand.

December 2011

ESTA Utilities will be undergrounding the over head power lines on Druids Avenue, Mount Barker between Adelaide Road and Cameron Road. This work is expected to commence in early February 2012 and be completed by 30 June 2012.

There will be some traffic delays and temporary detours required throughout this project. Once a commencement date is confirmed, Council will again communicate with the community to inform of timing and traffic management strategies to be in place whilst work is carried out on Druids Avenue.

It is a requirement that the contractor undertaking these works submits a traffic management plan to Council for approval prior to commencing works. All effort will be employed to minimise the inconvenience to the community.

Council's Urban Forest Officer has been consulted and determined that due to the extent of root plate associated with the heritage listed oak trees, it will be necessary to trench under the road as much as possible to prevent unnecessary root damage. Once the powerlines are undergrounded, the trees along Druids Avenue will be able to develop a more natural shape and form.

This project is funded through the Power Line Environment Committee (PLEC) and Council.
