Residents immediately in the vicinity of the proposed locations for driveway links, the perimeter threshold treatment at Woodside-Narine Road/North Road or the proposed intersection re-alignment at North Road/Junction Street will be contacted again in due course to discuss the proposed measures in further detail as the design process is undertaken.

Community Consultation Undertaken

The recently adopted Nairne Township Master Plan identifies the need to investigate measures along North Road, Nairne aimed at improving safety and reducing the use of the road as a ‘short cut’ connection between North Road and Nairne (East) as a high priority.

Murray F Young & Associates (MFY) Traffic Planners were engaged by Council to identify the existing traffic issues along North Road, investigate potential solutions and recommend a preferred concept for subsequent community consultation.

 The key design criteria determining how best to improve safety on North Road is based upon:

  •  addressing existing speeding and through-traffic issues;
  • continuing to service and not unduly inconvenience existing users (particularly North Road residents) of the road; and
  • considering the relevant Australian highway design standards to promote a safe road layout.

At the Council meeting held on 15 July 2013, Council endorsed a preferred Concept Traffic Management Scheme for Community Consultation which includes the following traffic management measures to improve safety:

  • Improved 50kph Signage along North Road;
  • Construction of Driveway Links (single vehicle assess within a short section of road) to slow traffic;
  • Entry Treatment at the junction of North Road with Nairne/Woodside Road;
  • Realignment of the North Rd/Junction Street Intersection; and
  • Signals at Woodside-Nairne Road/South Terrace Intersection (medium to long term)

It is important to recognise that the Woodside-Nairne Road/Old Princes Highway (South Terrace) junction is a State Government responsibility and the role of Council is one of advocacy on behalf of the local community. Any upgrading at this location would be dependent upon State Government.

Council sought feedback from the Community on the attached proposal:
