In recent years, Mount Barker District Council has been formally noted as being amongst some of the fastest growing communities over a sustained period in Australia.  This growth has had a significant impact on a number of issues in the district, including services and programs available for young people.  Mount Barker has emerged as the regional hub for program and service provision in the Adelaide Hills area with some services and programs in Mount Barker being provided by outreach from Murray Bridge and the Eastern suburbs.

A significant proportion of the district's population are aged 12-25 and significant number in the 7-18 years age group.  Population projections in line with anticipated growth in the region via the rezoning of land in the District estimates further significant growth in these population groups.  As a result of current growth, the demands on infrastructure, services and programs for young people has placed considerable pressure on existing suppliers and created the need for a broader, more responsive infrastructure base to meet the developmental needs of young people.

Over the period of 2009 to late 2011, Mount Barker District Council commissioned a Youth Research Project to formally identify the needs of young people in the district. This youth specific study was conducted to capture the experiences of young people who live in the district and quantify a broad spectrum of social and demographic issues pertaining to young people. The project comprises three components, a desktop study (primarily based on 2006 ABS data) a report capturing young people's experiences based on consultations and focus groups with young people and the third a youth & parent survey.  The project has produced the report listed below:

Regional Youth Round Table

In mid 2014, The Adelaide Hills Youth Sector Network in collaboration with local government from across the Hills and Fleurieu region identified the need for a regional discussion to better understand the current and impending issues impacting on the region’s young people.  These issues are occurring across a number of important youth development domains.

To progress a regional level discussion of the issues, The Youth Round Table Working Group was formed, comprising, key representatives from four councils across the Hills and Fleurieu region, The Adelaide Hills Youth Sector Network, Youth Affairs Council of South Australia and Regional Development Australia, Adelaide Hills Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island. The YRT Working Group will continue to drive the next steps that will respond to the key themes emerging from the forum.
